Pharmaceutical Update - Proton Pump Inhibitor for Heartburn Relief
Article
AstraZeneca offers the proton pump inhibitor Nexium (esomeprazole) for heartburn and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease and for the healing of erosive esophagitis, a potentially serious condition associated with GERD. Nexium has also been approved, in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin, for eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with duodenal ulcer disease.
AstraZeneca developed Nexium as an optical isomer, the first proton pump inhibitor to be developed in this way, according to a company news release. Nexium is derived from the AstraZeneca drug, Prilosec (omeprazole), which is a mixture of two molecules with identical molecular structure but different three dimensional orientations in space. Nexium is one of these two molecules. Both drugs block the final step of acid induction in the stomach by inhibiting acid producing parietal cells.
