Improved Water Source

Short Interesting Facts About Us, the Human Body & More…
Did You Know That…
884 million people worldwide do not have access to an improved water source. An improved water source is defined as:
- Water that is supplied through a household connection
- Public standpipe
- Borehole well
- Protected dug well
- Protected spring
- Rainwater collection
An estimated 2.6 billion people lack access to improved sanitation. That’s more than 35 percent of the world’s population.
Water, sanitation and hygiene has the potential to prevent at least 9.1 percent of the global disease burden, and 6.3 percent of all deaths.
According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF, improved sanitation could save the lives of 1.5 million children per year who would otherwise succumb to diarrheal diseases.
Even if the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goal for improved drinking water and basic sanitation is reached by 2015, it will still leave:
- An estimated 790 million people (11% of the world’s population) without access to an improved water supply.
- An estimated 1.8 billion people (25% of the world’s population) without access to adequate sanitation.
