Prilosec (omeprazole) and GERD

Prilosec is available with a doctor’s prescription and is commonly called by it’s brand name, Prilosec. Non prescription Prilosec OTC 20mg delayed release tablets is sold over-the-counter for frequent heartburn only. Prilosec belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, called PPI’s. They are:

  • Prilosec – Omeprazole
  • Nexium – Esomeprazole
  • Prevacid – Lansoprazole
  • Protonix – Pantoprazole
  • Aciphex – Rabeprazole

Common Use of Prilosec

Prilosec is used to treat dyspepsia, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), and zollinger ellison syndrome. Prilosec works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

Prilosec may be used in combination with antibiotics such as amoxicillin and clarithromycin to treat certain types of ulcers. Prilosec may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
